About

Grassroots Curriculum is working to revolutionize the traditional educational model of classroom learning by infusing the curriculum with local and relevant content from students’ lives— through their families, cultures, histories, arts, communities, and experiences. As a locally-based clearinghouse and publisher, they seek to bring together students, parents, educators, and community members to compile, publish, and advocate for culturally relevant materials in schools.

The Request

The team at Grassroots Curriculum was looking for a partner to help them develop a new website and online store to house their Grassroots Curriculum Catalog and make it easier for educators to get the resources in a streamlined way. Over the years they had been growing to meet the demand for justice-centered curriculum and also publishing other works and classroom-ready materials such as the Urban Renewal or Urban Removal book, the Grassroots Curriculum Toolkit, graphic organizers, mini-units, merch items, and more.

They envisioned the catalog and clearinghouse online as an essential and growing home for various curricular materials they’ve help develop to support students, educators, families and community members in engaging in justice-centered learning and action for years to come. To date they’ve collaborated with 200+ curriculum contributors, spent 12+ years serving their community, and their materials, teachings, and events have impacted 10K+ young people in schools and communities in Chicago and beyond.

“We're trying to build a model where thousands of people — students, parents, community members, elders, academics, organizers, regular folk — can all have a seat at the table to decide what and how students learn.”
